Butler signs with the Peg, Perry see you later

. As per team policy, details of the agreement are not disclosed. Butler joins the Blue and Gold with more than 20 games of starters experience in the NFL.

Butler (6-8, 350, Purdue ’04, DOB: June 24, 1982 in Grand Rapids, Michigan) was drafted in the 6th round, 172nd overall, in the 2004 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He started 15 games for the Lions at Right Tackle in 2005. He also spent time with the Cleveland Browns in 2006.

Butler has spent the past two seasons with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz of the Arena Football League.

“We are very pleased to add an NFL-experienced lineman to our roster,” said head coach Paul LaPolice.

The Blue Bombers have also released import defensive end Fred Perry.

“Fred’s a quality individual and we appreciate his efforts with our club in 2009. We wish him the very best moving forward,” said head coach Paul LaPolice.

Big congrats going out to Paul Lapolice on joining the Winnipeg Bluebombers as their head coach. I also want to congratulate JIm Barker of the Stamps who is going to be the head man in TOronto. I also got word from my bud Don Narcisse that he is headed to the hall of fame this year. I am going to work something out with him to have an interview with the hall of famer on the site. THat should be awesome i look forward to that. I am off and on in Regina with dad for his medical treatments so this is not updated as much as it should. But i will try my best to update when i can. My opinion on the Matter. The courts handled the situation. IT is not our place to judge, we do not know all the facts. All I can say is the couple times I have met Eric TIllman he has been nothing short of a class act. He posed to take a picture, and even spent some time visiting. I really like him. I was dishardened to find out him resigning. I pray and wish eh finds a great job else where. I wish the best to the tillmans. Thank you for the many memories, and great football you brought. And as to who should get Gm. I am throwing my support behind Joe WOmack. THanks to all :)

Alexis Serna Re-signs with WInnipeg

Serna originally signed with the Blue Bombers on June 7, 2008. The Oregon State product dressed in all 18 games last season for the Bombers, leading the team in points scored with 161, while making 40 of 49 field goals. Serna won Special Teams Player of the Week for week 13 of the 2009 CFL season when he was good from distances of 53, 32, 13, and 41 yards.

Ross Hodgkinson, Interim VP of Football Operations, stated, “I think this is a very positive step for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to re-sign a player of Alexis’ caliber. Alexis is going into his third season with us and we have seen great progression in the past two years. He’s a great guy to have around our locker room and a very solid kicker in this league. I look forward to even better things from him as we move forward.”

Winner of the Lou Groza award (2005) as the best placekicker in U.S. college football, Serna was the kicker for all four years at Oregon State (2004-2007) and a punter as a senior. He finished his collegiate career as the all-time scoring leader in Beavers history (384 points).

“It’s a privilege for me to re-sign with the Bombers and continue my career in Winnipeg. I’m really looking forward to the 2010 season both personally and for our club. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers Board of Directors has made a number of decisions as a result of the immediate resignation of President and CEO Lyle Bauer, and Head Coach Mike Kelly being relieved of his duties.

The Board has appointed Jim Bell as interim President of the Winnipeg Football Club, and Ross Hodgkinson interim Vice-President of Football Operations. Bell has been with the club since 2002, serving as the Vice President of Finance and Administration since 2006. Hodgkinson has been in the role of Director of Football Operations since 2006 and has worked closely in the acquisition of players during his tenure.

At this time the Winnipeg Football Club has achieved season ticket sales at a rate of 97% compared to this time in December, 2008. While this is very respectable, we realize the uncertainty of the past while may have delayed the decision of some season ticket holders. We are therefore extending the period for season tickets holders to renew until Friday, January 8.

The board has adjusted its meeting schedule so that it will be meeting every two weeks to ensure progress on the hiring of new personnel, continued operation of the team and work on changes to the football operations heading into 2010.

The Board of Directors is committed to moving quickly and efficiently, while being thorough in their plans to fill the key executive’s positions and improve the overall operations of the club going into the 2010 season.

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce today that President and CEO Lyle Bauer has resigned after ten seasons with the club. Bauer leaves the Winnipeg Football Club with a record of 90-88-2 as the President & CEO. The team made the postseason seven of the ten seasons Bauer was at the helm, advancing to the Grey Cup in 2001 and 2007. The club hosted five playoff games and one Grey Cup at Canad Inns Stadium during Bauer’s tenure.

Bauer took over the franchise in 2000 and one of his first tasks as leader was to implement a strategic business plan that would guide the club on the path to success. That plan not only set the stage on which the football club staff could perform, it also created an environment in which Manitoba businesses could once again feel confident in investing in the Blue Bombers.

Significant fundraising and debt-reduction strategies have also been a hallmark of Bauer’s leadership. At the time of his hiring the football club was more than $5 million in debt. Following the success of the past couple of seasons, the football club is in the black financially and is now regarded as a model of fiscal responsibility.

"I am very appreciative of the time I have been able to spend with this organization and extremely proud of the progress which has been made since the turn of the millennium", Bauer said.

“Together we have achieved financial stability, embarked on new business initiatives, and have presented a plan for a new stadium". We have also had on field success in participating in the post season, hosting of playoff games, and appearing in the Grey Cup Championship Game twice in addition to hosting one of the best Grey Cup Festivals in recent history".

This game will go down as one of the most amazing grey cups in recent memory. I am impressed that the Riders played as well as they did. Thank you Riders. I am upset of the penalty but hey it happens. It was a great game close and if any one told us at the beginning of the year we would lose the grey cup by one point. We would of called them full of crap. This game you knew it was a matter of time before the Als would get pumped and come back. I am proud of the boys this year. I must say the next few years look bright in Riderville. Hold your head high! we have nothing to be upset with. I will try to have John Lynch on Tuesday to talk about the game. I must say I am suprized. The Riders won against Calgary, Durant looked amazing completed an amazing 18 of 25 passing which is 72 percent. He showed alot of composture in the pocket and made good decisions. He had three touchdown passes and most importantly no interceptions. Now here comes the hard thing we have to play Montreal I believe we can do it. In the second game against Montreal we should of beat them. But this is for the Grey Cup. Dream Big Saskatchewan Dream Big. Next Sunday could be our second grey cup in 3 years. I am on my way back to Yorkton my uncle Ken is taking me :) Go Riders another Article tommorow!

It's game day today! Do or die time! Only one may move on from the west. Today the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be taking on the Calgary Stampeders. In a one game show down to go the Grey Cup. Either way you look it one of the teams will be in the Grey Cup for the second time in three years. The Stampeders of course won it last year and the Riders the year before that. Which QB will show up for the Stamps, Hank or his twin brother Frank? The Stampeders got into the western final by defeating the Eskimos in Calgary last week. This game for the Riders is huge, it is the first time they hosted a West final in 33 years. In 1976 they made the grey cup but lost it. And we will not tell you how because all Rider fans know and hate how it happened. Pre game on Tsn is slated for 3 bells Saskatchewan Time. GO to tsn's site www.tsn.ca/cfl watch the sweet feature they did on Getzlaf amazing job. Even Rod Pedersen makes an apperance on it. You could hear Lynch as well.

My plans for the game Is probably going to my Friend Ron Rimer's and watching it with him and my dad having pizza. MMMMMMMMmmmmmm Pizza!!! I garauntee you if the Riders win I will not be sleeping tonight. I will be to pumped. I was dumb enough to bet with my best friend Ken Britton. I bet if the Riders win he has to hang the Rider flag on his flag pole at his house, as well as feed me supper some night. No suprize it had to with food. If the Riders lose its more drastic for me. I have to take the damn stampeder flag with me in my car. That will burn and burn bad. As well as sing we are the champions on the radio and talk nice about the stampeders. Let's hope that does not happen or it will be a long week!!

TORONTO _ B.C. Lions quarterback Casey Printers was named CFL offensive player of the week Tuesday while teammate Ricky Foley was named defensive player of the week and top Canadian.

Printers threw for 360 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' 34-27 overtime victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Division semifinal last weekend. He also connected with Ian Smart on an eight-yard touchdown pass in overtime.

Tiger-Cats quarterback Kevin Glenn was also considered.

Foley, a unanimous pick as top Canadian, had six tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Hamilton linebacker Otis Floyd was runner-up for the defensive award.

Edmonton Eskimos kick returner/wide receiver Skyler Green was named special teams player of the week.

He had a 93-yard return for a touchdown in a 24-21 loss to the Calgary Stampeders in the West Division semifinal. Green, a unanimous pick for the honour, finished with 176 return yards.

Great News on the CFL Front!!

Ratings are high, and it looks like a new team is going to be back in a familar ground. Ottawa looks like they may be making an appearance back in the league after a few years of not being in the league. Tonight council voted 15-9 in favor of fixing up Lansdown Park in Ottawa so that is a great sign. Looks like the CFL will back. I hope it works out this time.

First of Big kudos to Hamilton for the come back against B.C. I was hoping you would of pulled it off the upset that was. I was cheering for Yorkton ,Sask native Jordan Matechuk. I went to school with him, as well cheering former Rider Yannick Carter. THough sadly it was not meant to be. COngrats B.C. GOod luck against Montreal. I think B.C. will get spanked there and my buddy Anwar Stewart will hit Casey Printers around a few times. And my good friend Damon Duval will kick like 6 field goals. I am a little bias when I have friends playing lol.

Something I never realized was that Casey Printers was an answered prayer. Wally Buono or how ever you spell his last name. He was praying for what to do at quarterback and the Big Guy told him to get Casey Printers. Apperently earlier in the year Wally Said no to Casey Printers, and he disrupted the locker room bla bla. But he changed his tune when God told him else wise. Way to listen to God Wally. GOod to see some men of faith listening to what the Big Guy says. I know I have trouble listening to him. Sadly Wally, I believe you will need alot more help then the big guy against Montreal because you had a few procedures against Hamilton imagine the noise in Olympic Stadium. But if you prove me wrong Kudos to you and I guess I am wrong. Would not be the first time, nor will it be the Last.

Calgary vs Edmonton

This one transpired the way I thought it would, but I still had some faith for Scott Gordon, and Mo LLoyd who play with Edmonchuck. Ricky Ray almost hit Fred Stamps on a few big plays that I am sure would of made a huge difference in the outcome. It looks like Rob Lazeo centre for the Stamps may be hurt and not play against the Riders next SUnday in the West Final. That is the rumour. I think, but am not 100 percent sure it could be a smoke screen. I know teams like to play that once in a while.Regardless of who is qb. You still have to do your best and beat their guys on the field. I think the Riders will. And go to the grey cup. I am a bit bias,dillusional what ever you want to call it. If we were Americans we would be falling all over ourselves with the emergence of a new sports celebrity.Alas, in Canada we are too reserved for that. So when Jesse Lumsden recently teamed with pilot Pierre Lueders to become national two-man bobsleigh champions, it was accomplished with sadly little fanfare.The championship run at Whistler Sliding Centre may be the first step in what could be a truly amazing two-sport career for Lumsden who of course also plays football in the Canadian Football League.Jesse, the son of former CFL stand-out Neil Lumsden, is a rumbling power back who looked outstanding at times with the Hamilton Tiger Cats, although his career to-date has been punctured with injuries, limiting the impact he might have had in the league.Lumsden is now on the Edmonton Eskimo roster, where if healthy, he could blossom into a true superstar. The fans in Edmonton are going to love him, since the Esks are where his father shone for years.And, you just have a feeling Richie Hall, Edmonton's new head coach, will get the most out of the big backfielder. Lumsden could be just the counter balance to the air attack of Ricky Ray, arguably the best quarterback in the CFL, to really turn the Eskimo offence into a fearsome unit.But, back to what Lumsden accomplished on the bobsled track. It was something that has to be deemed amazing already.Lueders with Lumsden on the brake clocked a two-run combined time of one minute, 44.73 seconds to finish in first place, pretty impressive given Lumsden is a newcomer to the sport.With the 2010 Winter Olympic around the corner, and on Canadian soil, the question of whether Lumsden might be there, is a delicious one from the point of view of creating a Canadian hero. Imagine for a moment that Lumsden puts together a healthy CFL season, and is among the running elite, as his skill suggest he could be.Then imagine weeks after the CFL season he steps to the Olympic podium for a medal."When I volunteered to give bobsleigh a try, I never figured I would end up at this point. Appointment of Curtis Emerson as Director, Events & Production For the CFL

The Canadian Football League (CFL) added some valuable experience to its roster today with the appointment of Curtis Emerson as Director, Events & Production.

"Curtis brings a wealth of experience to the CFL that will benefit us as we continue to grow all of our annual events, especially our premier event, the Grey Cup," said Jamie Nishino, Vice President of Marketing & Broadcasting for the CFL.

Emerson, most recently with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), brings more than 20 years of experience to the CFL. He has worked for two NBA franchises, the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors, as well as the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs. During his tenure with MLSE, Emerson managed the broadcast and production facilities at Air Canada Centre including the recent HD upgrade. He also played an integral role in the design and implementation of the technical facilities at both the Ricoh Coliseum and BMO Field. Also an experienced production professional, Emerson directed and managed stadium shows for sports teams, touring events and concerts.

For the CFL, Emerson will be responsible for the management and execution of all events, including Canada's largest sporting event, the Grey Cup.

"The CFL and the Grey Cup is such a big part of our Country's culture," said Emerson. "I'm honoured and excited to join the CFL team in delivering this world class event to millions of Canadians each year. I am a lifelong CFL fan and I look forward to this new challenge."

Emerson officially begins his new role with the CFL on April 1st.

Spring Expo

We are going to be at spring expo in Yorkton this year. April 17-19th. We will be signing intrested parties in taking a bus to Regina for Saskatchewan Roughrider games. The cost will be 120 a person. With this you get, Game ticket,food, and trasnsportation. We will also are also working on details to bring a few of the Riders on the bus after the game to sign some autographs and meet up with everyone. THere is also a season pass for 1000 bucks. Hamilton, ON - (March 10, 2009) - The Canadian Football Hall of Fame has a new chair, some new board members and a new idea.

The new chair is McMaster University professor Steve Howse.

Along with Howse, the new members are Murray Souter, former chief executive of Black's camera, and former Hamilton Tiger-Cat quarterback Dave Marler, a local investment counsellor.

And the new idea is moving this year's Hall of Fame weekend -- set for this Sept. 24-26 -- to the city of Winnipeg.

All of these changes became official at a meeting of the Hall's Board of Directors last evening.

"Like the Grey Cup trophy itself, the Hall resides here in Hamilton, but it truly belongs to all Canadians," Howse said.

"So it makes sense to share our annual induction weekend, and the festivities that go with it, with some other Canadian Football League cities. This will help raise the Hall's national profile, and generate some new revenue, both of which will help us reach our eventual goal: a new or at least improved Canadian Football Hall of Fame, right here in Hamilton."

The first order of business last night, however, was a tribute issued to three outgoing members of the Hall of Fame board: former chair Bill Tidball, Mario Vespa and Gabe Macaluso.

"In total, these three gentlemen have dedicated more than 40 years of service to the Hall, out of their love for Canadian football, and their dedication to the city of Hamilton," Howse said. "Our city, and all Canadians who love the game of football, along with the men honoured here as inductees, owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude."

All three men were appointees of the Canadian Football League. Other board members are appointed by the City of Hamilton.

"As we approach the playing of the one hundredth Grey Cup game in 2012, the history and tradition of our great game, and its greatest players, coaches and builders, has never been more important," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"The time and effort contributed by these men, and all members of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame's board, should be appreciated by everyone associated with our league, from our players to our fans to team executives."

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum is a non-profit registered charity that has been located in Hamilton since 1962. The current hall of fame was established beside the city's municipal building in 1968. The current facility was opened in 1972.

"The fact that the area surrounding Hamilton City Hall is now under renovation, making the movement of vehicles and parking difficult, was another factor in the decision to take the induction weekend on the road this year," said Mark DeNobile, the Hall's executive director.

"Organizers in Winnipeg, along with the Blue Bombers football club, are very excited by this news and are looking forward to a tremendous event."

The induction class of 2009, as well as details on the Canadian Football Hall of Fame Induction Weekend and Game in Winnipeg, will be announced soon.

Sometimes you just have to smile when you realize for the most part the powers that be in the Canadian Football League are working toward making the game even more exciting.
The League has announced its Board of Governors are considering a number of rules changes, changes already approved by the league's rules committee.
The most interesting, a potentially exciting of the moves would give the coaches the green light to use so called "wildcat" formations that would move the quarterback around, instead of requiring him to stand behind or under centre.
In a league already as wide open as the CFL is offensively, the idea of diversifying formations for the quarterback is tantalizing as a way to create new opportunities for the offence.
While generally the new formations might amount to a few specialty plays in a game, it will create some unusual sets which defences will need to adjust too. The more a defence has to change its normal coverages, the more likely a receiver or running back will be sprung for a gain.
The change will be an excellent addition to the CFL, in particular for the more non-traditional head coaches and offensive coordinators, those willing to switch things up, and go a little wild.
The new formations will also tend to favour mobile quarterbacks, those who are already adept at being creative,
It would have been great for a QB such as Doug Flutie, who would have no doubt been even more elusive and successful with a few more play sets in his repertoire.
Of the current set of pivots in the league, someone such as Kerry Joseph could benefit, although we saw last season how ineffective he was in Toronto where the idea of razzle-dazzle on offence was to go to the shotgun formation.
Given a bit more flare on offence, Joseph could be a huge fan of the so-called 'wildcat' formations in a hurry.
Two other rule changes up for consideration focus on the kicking game, although neither eliminates the silly one-point awarded on a missed field goal, which remains perhaps the dumbest scoring rule in all of sports.
What the changes could do is see a bit more focus on actually football plays rather than kicks.
The first idea is to move back the kick-off following a safety touch, to reduce the number of times a team chooses to take a knee in its own end zone.
OK that one is pretty straight forward, and makes sense without changing much in terms of the game. It basically means we might see a few more run-outs on kicks to the end zone, although maybe not as many as those calling for the change think. It's still a risk that you could end pinned inside the 10 if you chance to run it out, and a kick even from the 25-yard line is still going to be considered a better option in most cases by most coaches.
Another change would require a team that kicks a successful field goal to then kick off to its' opponents, increasing the number of kick returns,
Here is another solid decision, since returns are potentially one of the most exciting plays in the game, so anything which adds a few more to a game, is generally positive.
The fourth recommendation would awarding a team a third challenge of an official's ruling using instant replay if its' first two challenges are successful.
While this one seems logical. How many times do we want a ref under the hood reviewing tape? The league should have more confidence in its official than to want to add more reviews to the system.
It is positive that all four proposed rule changes were suggested by CFL fans as for the first time the League called for suggestions from the people that matter most. Fans responded with some 2,000 suggestions suggesting CFL lovers want to be involved in their game.
"We tend to look at our game like a precious stone that has been in the family for generations: we're willing to put a new shine on it, but we strive to be very careful not to damage it," said Tom Higgins, the CFL's director of officiating and a member of the rules committee in a release. "We feel the rule changes we've discussed today can improve an already great product, and now the final say rests with our board."
Higgins is right, the moves are generally good, made more interesting in that they came from the fans. Just let's hope the Governors are wise enough to implement the changes for the upcoming season

Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Ken Miller announced today they have signed three players to the defence – import defensive back Chris McKenzie, import linebacker Jerrell Freeman and non-import defensive back Brady Browne. Financial terms of the contracts were not released.McKenzie (5’9” – 190 lbs) was a two year starter at Arizona State where he accumulated 61 tackles, 11 pass break-ups and three interceptions. At the conclusion of his senior year, McKenzie attended the NFL Combine where he recorded 4.32 in the 40-yard dash – a time which tied the sixth fastest time in combine history. Prior to heading to ASU, the New York City native spent two seasons at Glendale Junior College where he received many accolades including being named first-team All-American and Region-1 Player of the Year. In 2005, McKenzie signed as a free agent with the NFL’s Houston Texans and went on to spend three seasons with the team. In his rookie year he dressed in three games tallying four tackles and one quarterback sack. In 2008, the defensive back played with the AFL’s Arizona Rattlers.Freeman (6’0” – 220lbs) played four seasons at Mary Hardin-Baylor where he finished as the school’s career leader in tackles and was named the American Southwest Conference Player of the Year four times. In his senior year he had 59 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and six quarterback sacks. In 2008, the linebacker signed as a free agent with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans – making him the first player from Mary Hardin-Baylor to get a shot in the NFL. The Waco, TX native was released by the team later that season.Browne (5’10 – 200 lbs) – played four years at the University of Manitoba. In his senior year the defensive back recorded 24 tackles and two interceptions for the Vanier Cup Champions. He was also named a Canada West All-Star and a CIS second-team All-Canadian that same season. The Burnaby, B.C. native was selected in the 5th round (38th overall) by the B.C. Lions in the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft and spent the 2008 season on the Leos practice roster.

Record Setting Weekend at CFL Evaluation Camp

Toronto, ON - (March 8, 2009) - The 2009 CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto this weekend was highlighted with new records set by Jamall Lee in the vertical jump and 40-yard sprint and Jim Allin in the short shuttle.
Lee's first record came on Saturday when he leaped 44 inches, surpassing Samuel Giguere's mark of 42 inches from last year, giving him the highest jump on record.
The running back from Bishop's University continued his stellar performance today by running a 4.39 40-yard sprint. The previous fastest time on record was 4.41 seconds set in 2004 by Jean-Fredrick Tremblay, a wide receiver from Laval.
Lee entered the weekend as the second highest ranked prospect by the CFL's Scouting Bureau and was excited to hear that he set two new benchmarks.
"It's been a lot of hard work and a lot of sacrifice and it just feels great to do well in front of such a big crowd at such an important time," said Lee.
While confident, the son of former CFL running back Orville Lee knows that he has to continue working hard towards the 2009 Canadian Draft and hopefully into a CFL training camp in June.
"This weekend definitely gives me a lot of confidence but it also makes me want to work harder to maintain that level, and even surpass it one day."
Allin, a defensive back from Queen's University, posted a top score of his own when he was clocked at 3.97 seconds in the short shuttle, surpassing the previous record set by Mathieu Proulx (4.07 seconds) in 2005.
In total, fifty top Canadian football prospects participated this weekend in a series of strength and agility tests in front of general managers, head coaches and scouts from all CFL teams.
In addition to the testing, players were also interviewed by teams, an exercise that provides clubs with valuable information as they prepare for the 2009 Canadian Draft on Saturday, May 2.
"Each team has the ability to select 20 of the 50 players here to interview them personally," said Bob O'Billovich, General Manager of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who currently hold the first and third draft selections overall. "This allows us to get a pretty good feel about the players who are here. It's important because it gives us a good heads up that helps get the process started for the Draft."

Its Board of Governors is considering: • Moving back the kick-off following a safety touch, to reduce the number of times a team chooses to take a knee in its own end zone;• Giving coaches the green light to use so called "wildcat" formations that would move the quarterback around, instread of requiring him to stand behind or under centre;• Gequiring a team that kicks a successful field goal to then kick off to its' opponents, increasing the number of kick returns ;• Awarding a team a third challenge of an official's ruling using instant replay if its' first two challenges are successfull.
All four ideas were approved today by the league's rules committee, and were among those suggested by CFL fans.
"We tend to look at our game like a precious stone that has been in the family for generations: we're willing to put a new shine on it, but we strive to be very careful not to damage it," said Tom Higgins, the CFL's director of officiating and a member of the rules committee. "We feel the rule changes we've discussed today can improve an already great product, and now the final say rests with our board."
This year, for the first time, CFL fans were invited by the league to submit their ideas for rules changes. More than 2,000 submissions were received, most of them detailed and all of them passionate about the game and how it's played.
Several fans wanted some sort of change made to the safety touch, citing coaches' tendency to surrender two points in their own end zone to preserve field position, instead of punting the ball away to their opponents, which could sent up a kick return or offensive drive with a high chance of scoring.
The committee is suggesting moving the kickoff following a safety back, from the 35 yard line to the 25 yard line, which could encourage more coaches to kick the ball away rather than take a knee in the end zone.
Other fans called for the introduction of the so-called "wildcat formation," which would require a change to the current CFL rule that requires the quarterback to always line up under or behind the centre of the offensive line.
The committee wants to allow the quarterback to move to other spots in a formation, including at wide receiver, before the ball is snapped.
Fans generally wanted to see more kick returns, citing a return that goes for a touchdown as one of the most exciting plays in Canadian football. The commitee is suggesting requiring a kick off after every made field goal, instead of giving the receiving the team the option of scrimmaging from their 35-yard-line. It is also proposing awarding a team with a third challenge of an official's call using replay if its' first two challenges are successful. ''Other topics brought forward by our fans, or by committee members, ranged from the rouge to the convert to allowing more types of plays to be challenged on the basis of instant replay," Higgins said.
"But at the end of the day, there wasn't a clear consensus, among our fans or committee members, on exactly what should be done to improve those rules, so they've been tabled for future discussion."
The Board of Governors has the power to accept, reject or even alter the rules committee's suggestions. It will meet later this Spring, in plenty of time to institute rule changes in time for the Canada Day kickoff of the Canadian Football League's regular schedule.
"I want to thank the fans that took the time to send us their ideas to improve our game," said CFL Commissionner, Mark Cohon.
"While there wasn't always unanimity on exactly what should be done, there was lots of spirited debate on our fan forums and in the media, and virtually everyone agreed our process was stronger for our fans' input and insight, and it's something we hope to continue," he said.
"Over the years, many significant rules changes have been discussed by the committee or our board more than once before they have moved forward. So it's likely that in addition to the changes brought forward today, others submitted by fans will be considered in the years ahead."

Hufnagel Named 2008 CFL Coach of the Year
Hamilton, ON - (March 3, 2009) - Calgary Stampeder head coach John Hufnagel was named the 2008 CFL Coach of the Year this afternoon at the CFL Congress in Hamilton, Ontario.

Hufnagel was presented the Annis Stukus trophy by CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon. The trophy is awarded annually to the league's best coach as voted by the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).

"Our coaches are all tremendous teachers, motivators, mentors and leaders, and no coach epitomizes this more than John Hufnagel," said Cohon. "On behalf of the Board of Governors, and fans from across the country, congratulations to John Hufnagel, a well-deserving recipient of this coaching honour."

In his inaugural season as head coach, Hufnagel led the Calgary Stampeders to first place in the West Division for the first time since 2000, posting a 13-5 regular season record, tops in the CFL. Their success continued into the playoffs as the Stamps defeated the BC Lions in the West Final, before claiming the ultimate prize: a 22-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the Grey Cup.

The Fans two cents on Rule Changes

TORONTO - The Canadian Football League will consider three rule changes proposed by fans when the league's rules committee holds its annual winter meeting this week.The league received more than 1,000 letters and e-mails when commissioner Mark Cohon issued a call for fan input into the process. The league will consider three fan suggestions for discussion: changes to converts, safeties and the controversial single point.Fans complained convert kicks after touchdowns are automatic and statistics back them up: kickers have a 99.5 per cent success rate."We don't want our fans going to get popcorn or a hot dog because it's just an automatic play," CFL officiating director Tom Higgins said.Higgins said the committee could consider moving the ball back five yards on point after attempts.Higgins said many fans felt there's not enough of a downside to conceding a safety, and that the league might look at having the conceding team kick from its own 20-yard line instead of its 35.As for the single, many fans feel rewarding a point when the receiving team fails to run a kick or missed field goal out of the end zone isn't fair and should be scrapped.Higgins sees the point of all three proposed changes but isn't predicting any bold predictions will be made to the league's board of governors."I don't expect anything big because we're traditionalists," he said. "But anything's possible."

RIDERS ACQUIRE DONOVAN ALEXANDER FROM MONTREAL Saskatchewan Roughrider head coach Ken Miller announced today they have acquired non-import defensive back Donovan Alexander from the Montreal Alouettes. In return the Alouettes will receive second round picks in the 2009 and 2010 Canadian Draft.

In 2008, Alexander (5'11 – 185 lbs) dressed in four games as a defensive back with the Alouettes after spending time with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. The Winnipeg native played three seasons at the University of North Dakota with Rider receiver Weston Dressler. In his senior year with the Fighting Sioux, Alexander dressed in 12 games and tallied 47 defensive tackles, two tackles for a loss and nine knockdowns. He was also a member of the UND track and field team and ran 4.43 40-yard dash on his pro day work-out for NFL teams. Alexander was selected in the third round (23rd overall) by the Alouettes in the 2007 Canadian Draft. "Donovan is a very skilled athlete, who, along with Leron Mitchell and Konrad Wasiela, now gives us a very legitimate chance to alter our ratio and play with a Canadian cornerback, if we chose to do so," stated head coach Ken Miller. "The fact Donovan was selected in the third round needs to be viewed in the context of his desire to return to North Dakota for his senior season. Many times players, who are being drafted as 'futures,' go much later than they would if coming out that same year. Brent Johnson, of course, is one of many examples of this, when the Lions took him in the third round, back in 2000, knowing he was going back to Ohio State. In speaking with Donovan, it's obvious he's a first class young man, and he's very pleased to be coming here and playing so close to home." Hamilton, ON - (February 20, 2009) - The Canadian Football League Congress is coming to Hamilton March 3rd and 4th.

"Congress is the biggest league gathering we have, outside of Grey Cup, and we're excited about bringing it to downtown Hamilton ," Commissioner Mark Cohon said here today.

"It involves almost every group that works for the CFL, from head coaches, general managers and athletic therapists, to ticketing experts, marketing executives and team presidents," he said.

"It's where we plan for the upcoming football season; share best business practices, and develop new ideas. And with our league on the upswing, but the economy struggling, what we do at Congress this year is particularly important to our success this year."

This year's Congress includes the CFL's 2008 Coach of the Year luncheon on March 3rd, featuring nominees John Hufnagel of the Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders, Ken Miller of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Marc Trestman of the Montreal Alouettes.

It also includes on March 4th a meeting of the CFL's rules committee which will, for the first time, have the opportunity to consider input from fans, who have been asked to submit their suggestions for rule changes by visiting www.cfl.ca/rules or by sending an email to rules@cfl.ca.

" Hamilton welcomes the CFL Congress. The roots of Canadian football run deep in Hamilton and are almost as old as the city itself," said Fred Eisenberger, the Mayor of Hamilton.

It will be an opportunity for journalists to talk in a relaxed setting with our top coaches, including some newcomers to the CFL head coaching ranks: Bart Andrus of the Toronto Argonauts, Richie Hall of the Edmonton Eskimos and Mike Kelly of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, as well as Hamilton's Marcel Bellefeuille, who is the Tiger-Cats' head coach this year after filling that post in an interim capacity last season.

Toronto, ON (February 19, 2009) -- For the first time, Canadian Football League (CFL) fans are being asked to propose rules changes that can "make our great game even better," says Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"We know our fans have the best interests of our game at heart, that they cherish its traditions, understand what makes it unique, and yet want to make it even stronger," Cohon said yesterday after inviting fans to submit their suggestions to the league's rules committee.

"So it makes perfect sense to include them in our annual discussion of rule changes. It's part of what we mean when we say This is Our League: it belongs to every Canadian who cares about the CFL, and supports it."

Fans are asked to send their ideas by visiting CFL.ca/rules or by emailing -- rules@cfl.ca -- by Friday, February 27. They will be shared with the members of the league's rules committee as it prepares to meet as part of the annual CFL Congress, this year in Hamilton on March 3rd and 4th.

"Our fast-paced, wide-open, three-down game is a great game, and that was never clearer than last season, when scoring was up, games were close, and exciting finishes were the order of the day. But everything can be improved," Cohon said in a message to fans posted on the league's website, CFL.ca.

"That's the spirit in which our rules committee gathers each year during CFL Congress. A collection of team presidents, general managers, coaches and officials, along with a representative of the players' association, it meets to discuss which rules should be replaced, changed or tweaked to make our game even better," he said.

"This year, we're asking you to provide input to the committee. We want your ideas and suggestions. We can't promise the committee will accept them all. But we will make sure your ideas are shared with its members."

Tom Higgins, the CFL's director of officiating, said it's impossible to predict the outcome of this year's meeting.

"The committee takes its task very seriously, and has tremendous respect for the game and its place in our country," Higgins said.

"The changes it has brought forward over the years to the Board of Governors have ranged from significant innovations, such as our overtime format, to subtle changes in how we interpret existing rules. Sometimes, new ideas make their way into our rule book, sometimes they fall by the wayside because of a lack of consensus, and sometimes they're tabled for further research and refinement," he said.

"What we can say without a doubt about this year's discussion is that it can only be strengthened by including input from our fans."

Jerome Haywood is going from the “east” to the East. Haywood signed a 1 year contract, plus an option, with the Montreal Alouettes, the leagues most Eastern team. Haywood spent the last two years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, even playing in the 2007 Grey Cup against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.This will be Haywood’s second stint with the Al’s, the first one being in 2006, when he appeared in 11 games.Haywood entered the CFL in 2002, with the now defunct Ottawa Renegades and has a career total of 223 tackles and 29 sacks in 107 games.The woeful Hamilton Tigercats have recently improved on their defence. The Ti-cats signed non-import linebacker Agustin Barrenechea.The six foot two, 235 pound Barrenechea returns to Hamilton, a city he played in for his first 3 and a half seasons. He was then traded to the Edmonton Eskimos on September 11th, 2007.Barrenechea has a total of 276 tackles (40 via special teams), three QB sacks and five picks in just 72 career CFL games.The Eskimos released him on Thursday, an odd move, seeing as “Augie” was the teams leading tackler

I am planning to Interview one of my friends who is a teacher in Yorkton. Mr.Trevena, your probably thinking whoopee a teacher. But Mr.Trevena is a great guy, and he infact has a rider connection. It is that he was Gainer the Gopher for 20 years. He started in 1978 and continued to 1998.He even got a grey cup ring from the win in 1989.I remember seeing it at school when he told the stories. So this should be an awesome interview to find out what Gainer the Gopher did before a game with routines, and so forth and so on. I am kinda looking forward to this one. Hall of Fame broadcaster Ken Newans and I had a chance to have a little bit of chin wag. We talked CFL football. Ken helped with Cfl broadcasts back in the day when CTV had exclusive rights to the CFL. He was with them from 1963 to 1973 where he was based out of Regina. Ken then when to Calgary where he worked until 1985. He know is retired and still helps with the Calgary Dinos. This was a long interview,and it seemed like I knew the man for ever. One of the nicest people I have interviewed and very knowledgeable. I cannot wait to have him on again some time. When I go to Calgary definetly would love to meet up with him and just talk football. I will upload the Interview today. I also talked to Norm Peel, better known as Big Norm. That will be put up a little later. And possibly interview Craig Adam, former global reporter and ctv sports net correspondant. Will let you know more later Peace A.N
